Committed to the Care and Well-Being of Bernese Mountain Dogs

Introduction

As the popularity of Bernese Mountain Dogs grows, so does the number of dogs in need of rescue or rehoming. While many families are well-prepared for the commitment, others may not fully understand the breed’s needs. Bernese Mountain Dogs are large, loyal, and require proper care, training, and attention. Life changes such as illness or financial hardship can also lead to rehoming situations. Responsible pet ownership begins with understanding whether a Bernese Mountain Dog is the right fit for your lifestyle. We encourage you to explore the BMDCA Info Series and connect with BMDCA Breed Ambassadors for guidance.

Where do rescue Berners come from?

Many Bernese Mountain Dogs come from heartbreaking circumstances, with a significant number originating from puppy mills. These commercial breeding operations prioritize profit over the health and well-being of the animals, resulting in poor living conditions, inadequate or no veterinary care, and no socialization. Ohio, unfortunately, ranks as the second worst state for puppy mills in the United States, Holmes County alone has over 700 puppy mills. This makes the state a major source of abused, neglected, and homeless Bernese Mountain Dogs, as breed-specific rescues and clubs work diligently to remove dogs from these environments and provide them with proper care and loving homes. A lower percent of Bernese Mountain Dogs are owner surrenders. The surrenders are often due to financial hardships, life changes, or behavioral challenges that owners feel unequipped to manage. Red Flags of a Puppy Mill · No access to the puppy’s parents or breeding facility · Always have puppies “available”

How You Can Help When looking to add a Bernese Mountain Dog to your family:

Do a lot of research and do not purchase a puppy on a website. Ethical breeders raise puppies in loving homes, provide health clearances, and offer lifelong support. Use trusted resources like BMDCA and our club’s website to find ethical breeders. Report suspected mills – File complaints with the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Educate others – Share information about the dangers of puppy mills. Support legislation – Advocate for stronger breeder regulations. What Should I Expect When Adopting a Rescue Bernese Mountain Dog? Adopting a Bernese Mountain Dog from a rescue can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s important to understand that many of these dogs come with unique needs. Some may have experienced trauma, neglect, or lack of socialization, especially those rescued from puppy mills. Others may be grieving the loss of their previous families or adjusting to new routines. Patience, consistency, and a gentle approach are key. Rescue Bernese Mountain Dog may require time to build trust, learn basic commands, or adapt to a home environment.
